Pitcher Chris Sale injures right foot; expected to be sidelined three weeks

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Chicago White Sox pitcher Chris Sale suffered an avulsion fracture on the lateral side of his right foot in an accident at his home yesterday, and the left-hander is expected to be sidelined three weeks before resuming baseball activities.

Sale, 25, underwent x-rays this morning at Banner Estrella Hospital in Glendale. He will undergo further tests once the swelling in his foot has subsided. At that point, his status for Opening Day will be better determined.

Sale finished third in the American League Cy Young Award voting last season after going 12-4 with a 2.17 ERA (42 ER/174.0 IP) and 208 strikeouts in 26 starts. He ranked among the AL leaders in virtually every category, including strikeouts per 9.0 IP (1st, 10.76), ERA (2nd), WHIP (2nd, 0.97), opponents average (3rd, .205), winning percentage (4th, .750), strikeouts (6th) and complete games (T6th, 2).
