LHP Edgar Olmos returned to Seattle
Major League Baseball voids Rangers waiver claim; Seattle designates INF Ji-Man Choi for assignment to clear 40-man spot
PEORIA, Ariz. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced tonight that left-handed pitcher Edgar Olmos has been returned to Seattle's roster. Major League Baseball voided the Texas Rangers waiver claim following a dispute of the health of Olmos' left (throwing) shoulder.
To make room on the Major League, 40-man, roster, Seattle has designated infielder Ji-Man Choi for assignment. Seattle now has 10 days to trade, release or outright Choi's contract to the minors.
Olmos, 24, went 3-3 with 3 saves and a 4.06 ERA in a career-high 51 relief appearances combined between Double-A Jacksonville and Triple-A New Orleans last season. He was claimed by Seattle from Miami on Nov. 20, 2014. He had not arrived in Mariners camp prior to be placed on waivers and claimed by Texas last week.
Choi, 23, was injured in the 9th inning of Seattle's first Spring Training game, March 4 vs. Padres. He underwent surgery this afternoon in Phoenix to repair a fractured fibula in his right leg and a torn deltoid ligament. Surgery was performed by Dr. Matt Maddox.
