Royals sign right-handed pitcher Chris Young to one-year deal

SURPRISE, Ariz. (March 7, 2015) - The Kansas City Royals announced today that the club has signed veteran right-handed pitcher Chris Young to a one-year, Major League contract. Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed. In a corresponding roster move, the Royals have placed right-handed pitcher Kris Medlen on the 60-day disabled list.

Young, 35, pitched for the Seattle Mariners last season, posting a 12-9 record with a 3.65 ERA (67 ER in 165.0 IP) and ranked eighth in the A.L. with a .234 opponents' batting average (143-for-612). He was named the American League's Comeback Player of the Year by The Sporting News after not pitching in the Major Leagues during the 2013 season. His 12 victories matched a career high, which he also did in 2005 with the Texas Rangers. The 6-foot-10 righty enjoyed success at home, going 8-4 with a 2.40 ERA and a .185 opponents' average at Safeco Field.

Young was a National League All-Star in 2007 as a member of the San Diego Padres. He has a 65-52 career record and a 3.77 ERA in 188 starts (189 appearances), pitching for the Texas Rangers (2004-05), San Diego Padres (2006-10), New York Mets (2011-12) and Seattle Mariners (2014).
