Mariners acquire LHP Mike Montgomery from Tampa Bay in exchange for RHP Erasmo Ramirez

Montgomery went 10-5 with a 4.29 ERA in 25 starts with AAA Durham last season

PEORIA, Ariz. - Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced tonight the club has acquired left-handed pitcher Mike Montgomery from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for right-handed pitcher Erasmo Ramirez.

Montgomery, 25, was on the 40-man roster of the Tampa Bay Rays and was still on the spring roster at the time of the trade. He has used 2 of his 3 options heading into the 2015 season.

Last season he won a career-high 10 games with Triple-A Durham, ranking 2nd in the International League in wins. He named a midseason All-Star and helped lead the Bulls to the International League Championship Series for the second consecutive season.

The Southern California native (Santa Clarita, CA) has appeared in 155 career minor league games (150 starts) in the Royals (2008-12) and Rays (2013-14) organizations. He was originally selected by Kansas City as a supplemental first-round pick in the 2008 June Draft (36th overall). He was acquired by the Rays prior to the 2013 season as part of a seven player trade involving RHP James Shields, RHP Wade Davis and OF Wil Myers.

He has made 6 relief appearances in spring games with the Rays, posting a 2.38 ERA (3 ER, 11.1 IP) with 9 strikeouts and 2 walks. Montgomery was rated by Baseball America and MLB.com as one of the top 50 prospects in baseball as recently as the 2012 season. He has been voted by Baseball America as having the best changeup in his organization in each of the last four seasons (2013-14 with TB, 2011-12 with KC).

Ramirez, 24, has appeared in 47 games (35 starts) over the last three seasons with the Mariners. The right-handed pitcher is out of options heading into the 2015 season. The native of Rivas, Nicaragua was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent on Sept. 1, 2007.
