Braves and Padres complete six-player trade
MIAMI -- The Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres completed a six-player trade this afternoon, as Atlanta acquired outfielders Cameron Maybin and Carlos Quentin, as well as minor-league outfielder Jordan Paroubeck, minor-league right-handed pitcher Matt Wisler and the Padres' competitive balance pick (41st overall selection) in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft, in exchange for outfielder Melvin Upton, Jr., and right-handed pitcher Craig Kimbrel.
Maybin, who turned 28 yesterday, has played in 561 career games in eight Major League seasons with Detroit (2007), Florida (2008-10) and San Diego (2011-14). He owns a .246 career batting average with 93 stolen bases in 117 attempts.
Quentin, 32, was originally selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round (29th overall) of the 2003 draft out of Stanford University. He made his Major League debut with the D'Backs in 2006 and spent four seasons in (2008-11) with the Chicago White Sox, followed by three seasons (2012-14) with San Diego. The two-time All-Star (2008 & '11) owns a .252 career batting average with 154 home runs and 491 RBI over parts of nine Major League seasons. In 2008, he finished fifth in the American League MVP race and earned a Silver Slugger award when he posted career highs of a .288 batting average with 36 homers and 100 RBI for the White Sox.
Wisler, 22, is ranked by Baseball America as the No. 1 overall prospect in the Padres' farm system entering the 2015 season. He completed his fourth minor league season in 2014, going 10-5 with a 4.42 ERA in 28 games (all starts) between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso. Wisler struck out a combined 136 batters in 146.2 innings, with just 42 walks. Over his final eight starts of 2014, he posted a 3.38 ERA with a 4-1 record.
The 6-foot-3, 175-pound right-hander was originally drafted by the Padres in the seventh round of the 2011 draft out of Bryan (Ohio) High School and owns a 25-15 record with a 3.40 ERA over four minor league seasons.
Paroubeck, a 20-year-old, switch-hitting outfielder, posted a .286 (40-for-140) batting average with 14 extra-base hits, including eight doubles in 34 games in his first season of professional baseball. He posted multi-hit efforts in 11 of his 34 games, including seven three-hit contests.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder was a Padres' second-round selection in the 2013 amateur draft out of Serra High School in San Mateo, Calif.
The Braves begin the 2015 campaign tomorrow (April 6) at Miami at 4:10 p.m. (SportSouth).
