Rangers Receive RHP Stolmy Pimentel on Waiver Claim from Pittsburgh Pirates

Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced today that the club has received right-handed pitcher Stolmy Pimentel on a waiver claim from the Pittsburgh Pirates. To make room for Pimentel on the 40-man roster, the club has transferred right-handed pitcher Lisalverto Bonilla from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list.

The Rangers will make a move to accommodate Pimental on the 25-man roster when he reports to the club.

Pimentel, 25, was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh on Sunday, April 5, when the Pirates set their season-opening 25-man roster. He made 9 Grapefruit League appearances for the Pirates this spring, going 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA (6 ER/11.0 IP) while holding opponents to a .268 average. Pimentel has pitched in each of the last two seasons for the Pirates, including a 2-1 record with a 5.23 ERA (19 ER/32.2 IP) and 38 strikeouts over 20 appearances in 2014. He was the only rookie to make the club's Opening Day roster last year. He missed time on the Pittsburgh disabled list last season with right shoulder inflammation and a right ankle sprain.

Originally signed by Boston as a non-drafted free agent in 2006, he was acquired by Pittsburgh in a Dec. 26, 2012 trade involving right-handed pitcher Joel Hanrahan. The Dominican Republic native is 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA (21 ER/42.0 IP) in 25 career relief appearances in the majors, all with the Pirates in 2013-14, averaging 10.1 strikeouts per 9 innings.

Bonilla was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 5, retroactive to March 31, with right elbow impingement.

With these transactions, the Rangers now have a full 40-man roster plus 6 players on the 60-day disabled list.
