Indians promote C Brett Hayes from Columbus; designate RHP Shaun Marcum; sign RHP Jhoulys Chacin

CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Indians today announced the following roster moves relative to the Major League roster:

Purchased the contract of C BRETT HAYES (#12) from the AAA Columbus Clippers.

Designated RHP SHAUN MARCUM for assignment.

Hayes, 31, hit .333 (9-27) this spring with 4 runs, 3 home runs and 7 RBI in 20 games in Major League camp with Cleveland after signing a Minor League free agent contract in December. He was assigned to AAA Columbus on April 5 and has appeared in 2 games for the Clippers thus far in 2015 (0-for-5). Hayes split the 2014 season between Kansas City and AAA Omaha.

The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has signed free agent RHP JHOULYS CHACIN (YO-lease chah-SEEN) to a Minor League contract. 

Chacin, 27, owns a Major League career mark of 38-48 with a 3.78 ERA in 124 games/109 starts (672.0IP, 619H, 282ER, 280BB, 514SO) over the last six seasons with the Colorado Rockies since 2009. He was signed by the Rockies in 2004 out of Maracaibo, Venezuela and pitched his entire career in the organization before being released on March 22. In 2011 and 2013 he topped 190.0 innings pitched with ERA's below 3.65 and in his career away from Coors Field he owns an ERA of 3.24 (56G/48GS, 297.2IP, 269H, 107ER). He was limited to 11 Major League starts in 2014 due to right shoulder soreness.

He is currently building up volume at the Goodyear Player Development Complex and will join the Triple-A Columbus roster in the coming weeks.
