Red Sox claim infielder Luis Jimenez off waivers from Milwaukee Brewers

Catcher Ryan Hanigan transferred to 60-day disabled list

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today claimed infielder Luis Jimenez off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, catcher Ryan Hanigan was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Jimenez, 27, was designated for assignment by the Brewers on Saturday. The right-handed batter appeared in 15 games for Milwaukee this season, going 1-for-15 with a run scored and a walk. Both of his starts came at third base (seven total games) and he also appeared defensively at second base once. Originally signed as an international free agent by the Angels in 2005, the Dominican native has played 67 career major league games over parts of three seasons between the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (2013-14) and Milwaukee (2015), batting .218 (34-for-156) with 19 runs, eight doubles, and seven RBI. He has primarily played third base (54 games, 40 starts), but also has experience at the major league level at first base (two games, one start), shortstop (one game), and second base (one game). In 2014, he ranked third in the Pacific Coast League with 34 doubles for the Angels' Triple-A Salt Lake affiliate, and also appeared in 18 major league games over three stints with the Angels.

Yesterday, Hanigan, 34, was placed on the 15-day disabled list and underwent surgery to fix a metacarpal fracture in his right hand. He hit .222 (12-for-54) with two doubles, one home run, five RBI, and a .354 on-base percentage in 19 games this year, his first with the Red Sox. In 577 career major league games with Cincinnati (2007-13), Tampa Bay (2014), and Boston (2015), the native of Andover, MA has hit .255 (416-1,633) with 59 doubles, 26 home runs, and a .353 on-base percentage, throwing out 33 percent (99-of-297) of attempted base stealers.
