Altuve named A.L. Co-Player of the Week

Major League Baseball announced this afternoon that Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve has been named the American League Co-Player of the Week along with Oakland A's outfielder Josh Reddick for the week of April 27-May 3. It marks the first time that Altuve has won this award.

Altuve is the first Astro to win an A.L. Player of the Week award this season, and is the first to win a weekly award since Chris Carter was named the AL Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 11-17, 2014. Dallas Keuchel was also named the AL Player of the Week last season for the week of May 19-25, 2014.

For the week, Altuve hit .467 (14x30) with seven runs, five doubles, one homer, eight RBI, two steals and a 1.233 OPS (.500 OBP/.733 SLG). He hit safely in six of his seven games during the week, including five multi-hit games. During the week, he ranked tied for first in the AL in hits and doubles, tied for third in runs, fifth in batting average, and tied for fifth in RBI and on-base percentage.

Altuve recently had an 11-game hitting streak from April 21-May 2, including nine consecutive multi-hit games (April 22-May 1) which tied a franchise record set by Jesus Alou (1969) and Billy Hatcher (1987). The 24-year-old leads the American League in hits (39) and ranks tied for first multi-hit games (13) and steals (9). In 2014, Altuve became the first player in franchise history to win a batting title, hitting a Major League-best .341.
