A's Select RHP Castro from Nashville; Option RHP Alvarez to Nashville

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's selected right-handed pitcher Angel Castro from Triple-A Nashville and optioned right-handed pitcher R.J. Alvarez to Nashville, the club announced today. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A's designated outfielder Alex Hassan for assignment.

Castro was 0-1 with a 3.79 ERA in six games, including two starts, with Nashville. He allowed a .211 opponents batting average and issued just three walks while striking out 20 in 19.0 innings. The 32-year-old right-hander did not allow a run over his final three outings (6.0 ip), including his last appearance Wednesday against Iowa (1.0 ip, 1 bb, 2 so). Castro is in his 10th professional season and will be making his Major League debut. He is 38-28 with a 3.76 ERA in 166 career minor league appearances, including 73 starts, in the Detroit, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles (NL), St. Louis and Oakland organizations.

Alvarez was recalled from Nashville last Saturday for his second stint with the A's this year and allowed five runs in 3.0 innings over four outings. He has a 13.00 ERA in 10 relief appearances overall.

Hassan was claimed off waivers from Texas last Saturday after the Rangers claimed him off waivers from Oakland April 9. He was also claimed off waivers by the A's and Baltimore during the off-season before being claimed again by Oakland Feb. 27. Hassan went 1-for-14 (.071) in four games with Nashville after hitting .267 with eight RBI in 16 games with Triple-A Round Rock in the Rangers farm system.
