Red Sox trade right-handed pitcher Edward Mujica to Oakland

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today traded right-handed pitcher Edward Mujica and cash considerations to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Mujica, 30, was designated for assignment by the Red Sox yesterday. In 11 relief appearances for Boston this season, the right-hander went 1-1 with a 4.61 ERA (7 ER/13.2 IP), allowing 15 hits and three walks while striking out eight batters. 

Signed by the Red Sox in December 2013, Mujica appeared in 75 games for Boston from 2014-15, going 3-5 with eight saves, three holds, a 4.03 ERA (33 ER/73.2 IP), and 51 strikeouts. The native of Venezuela has played parts of 10 major league seasons between the Cleveland Indians (2006-08), San Diego Padres (2009-10), Miami Marlins (2011-12), St. Louis Cardinals (2012-13), and Red Sox (2014-15). In 455 career big league games, including four starts, he is 22-24 with 49 saves and a 3.80 ERA (216 ER/511.2 IP).
