A's Hire Ron Washington as Major League Coach

The Oakland A's have hired Ron Washington as a Major League coach, the club announced today. Washington will join the club Friday in Tampa Bay and will be with the A's all season. He will be in uniform but is not eligible to be on the bench during games.

Washington returns to the A's after managing the Texas Rangers for nearly eight seasons from 2007-14. He compiled a 664-611 record and guided the Rangers to back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011. The Rangers posted four consecutive 90-win seasons from 2010-13 but were 53-87 when he resigned Sept. 5, 2014. The 63-year-old Washington has more wins than any other manager in Texas/Washington franchise history.

Washington spent 11 seasons as a coach with the A's from 1996-2006. After serving as the A's first base coach in 1996, he moved across the diamond to third base in 1997. In addition, Washington also worked with the A's infielders. Oakland led the league in fielding in 2004 and 2005 and finished second in 2006. Washington was also instrumental in the development of third baseman Eric Chavez, who won six consecutive Gold Gloves from 2001-06.
