Red Sox Acquire OF Carlos Peguero from Texas for Cash Considerations

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today acquired outfielder Carlos Peguero from the Texas Rangers in exchange for cash considerations. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Anthony Varvaro was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. Peguero will join the Red Sox during their upcoming series against the Rangers at Globe Life Park.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Peguero, 28, appeared in 30 games for the Rangers this season before being designated for assignment on May 20. The left-handed batter hit four home runs during the Rangers' seven-game road trip from May 4-10, homering once on May 5 at Houston and twice the following day against the Astros. Overall this season, Peguero has hit .186 (13-for-70) with 10 runs, four doubles, four home runs, and nine RBI while playing all three outfield positions, making 14 starts in left field and three in right field.

Signed by the Mariners as a non-drafted free agent in 2005, the Dominican native has combined to hit .194 (55-for-284) with 28 runs scored, 10 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs, and 37 RBI in 99 career games with Seattle (2011-13), Kansas City (2014), and Texas (2015). Peguero hit 30 home runs for Triple-A Omaha in 2014 and has homered 167 times in his minor league career, averaging one every 16.3 at-bats at the Triple-A level (83 HR/1,349 AB).

Varvaro underwent successful surgery yesterday to remove elbow calcification. The procedure was performed by Dr. David Altchek at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

Varvaro, 30, has made nine relief appearances for the Red Sox this season, going 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA (5 ER/11.0 IP). In parts of six major league seasons with Seattle (2010), Atlanta (2011-14), and Boston (2015), he is 7-9 with one save and a 3.23 ERA (66 ER/183.2 IP), recording 150 strikeouts and 70 walks in 166 appearances, all in relief. Originally selected by the Mariners in the 12th round of the 2005 June Draft, the Staten Island native is 14-38 with 29 saves and a 4.52 ERA (235 ER/467.2 IP) in 222 career minor league appearances (49 starts).
