Tigers select three players on first day of 2015 Draft
Tigers tab two pitchers and an outfielder with first three picks
DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers made three selections in the first 65 picks of the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft this evening.
The club selected righthanded pitcher Beau Burrows from Weatherford High School in Weatherford, Texas with the 22nd overall pick in the first round. Burrows posted a 0.78 ERA and 132 strikeouts in 72.0 innings as a senior at Weatherford High School. Burrows was selected to play in the 2014 Under Armour All-American Game at Wrigley Field and was named a 2015 Preseason High School All-American by Baseball America.
"The Tigers organization is excited to select Beau Burrows this evening," Tigers Vice President, Amateur Scouting and Special Assistant to the General Manager, David Chadd said. "He features a mid to upper 90s fastball with a plus breaking ball. We're very excited to have the opportunity to add him to our organization."
The 6-2, 200 pound righthanded pitcher was rated by MLB.comas the 12th-best righthanded pitching prospect available in this year's draft and the 30th-best prospect overall.
The Tigers selected outfielder Christin Stewart from the University of Tennessee with the 34th overall pick. A first team All-SEC selection in 2015, Stewart started 50 games and posted a .311 (55x177) batting average with 39 runs scored, eight doubles, two triples, 15 home runs and 47 RBI.
In three seasons with the Volunteers, Stewart has played in 150 games, including 147 starts, and has a .319 (172x540) career batting average with 111 runs scored, 35 doubles, 10 triples, 23 home runs and 113 RBI.
Detroit selected lefthanded pitcher Tyler Alexander from Texas Christian University with the 65th overall selection in the second round. Alexander has pitched in 15 games, including 14 as a starter, in 2015 and has a 6-2 record with a 2.86 ERA (91.1IP/29ER), 69 strikeouts and eight walks.
In two seasons with TCU, Alexander has compiled a 16-5 record with a 2.60 ERA (190.1IP/55ER), 128 strikeouts and 19 walks.
