Padres select eight players on second day of 2015 First-Year Player Draft

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres selected eight players today on the second day of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft. The 40-round draft concludes tomorrow with rounds 11-40 starting at 9:00 am P.T.

After the second day of drafting, the Padres have selected a total of nine players through the first 10 rounds after forfeiting the club's first round selection by signing free-agent pitcher James Shields this past offseason and trading their Competitive Balance Round A pick, 41st overall, to the Atlanta Braves as part of the six-player trade in April for RHP Craig Kimbrel and OF Melvin Upton Jr. The nine players selected thus far consist of five pitchers (four right-handed, one left-handed), three outfielders and a catcher. San Diego has drafted five college players and four high school players.

Jacob Nix, 19, was selected by the Padres in the third round (86th overall). He is a 6-4, 220-pound right-handed pitcher out of IMG Academy. The right-hander graduated from Los Alamitos High School (CA) in 2014 and was selected by the Houston Astros in the fifth round of the 2014 Draft, but did not sign. Nix pitched on the 2013 18U National Team for USA Baseball where he was teammates with LHP Brady Aiken. This past year for IMG Academy, he went 3-3 with a 2.11 ERA and 71 strikeouts against 10 walks and just 36 hits allowed in 47.0 innings pitched.

The left-handed hitter hit .421 (82-for-195) this past year, his junior season, with 25 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs, 57 RBI and 52 runs scored in 49 games played. His 25 doubles led the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) and set a school record for Florida Tech.   Over his three years at Florida Tech, he has hit .377 (196-for-520), with 57 doubles, one triple, 22 home runs, 115 RBI and 103 runs scored in 137 games played. He is the highest draft selection in the history of Florida Tech's program, four rounds ahead of former Major League pitcher Tim Wakefield (eighth round, 1988 Draft by Pittsburgh).

The right-handed hitter hit .529 (45-for-85) with 10 doubles, six triples, one home run, 29 RBI, 42 runs scored and 29 stolen bases this past season, his senior season for Franklinton High School (LA).
