Carlos Correa of the Houston Astros named the American League Rookie of the Month for June

Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa has been voted American League Rookie of the Month for June.
Correa batted .287 (27-for-94) with 13 runs scored, nine doubles, five home runs, 15 RBI and four stolen bases to claim his first monthly award. He is the first Astros player to win AL Rookie of the Month honors since starting pitcher Collin McHugh in September 2014. Among AL rookies with a minimum of 20 at-bats, the 20-year-old finished first in doubles, extra-base hits (14) and home runs, tied for second in runs scored and third in hits, batting average, slugging percentage (.543) and stolen bases. Starting pitcher Mike Montgomery of the Seattle Mariners finished close behind in second after going 3-2 with a 1.62 ERA in 44.1 innings pitched and two complete-game shutouts.

Correa, who was called up to the Majors on June 8th, is currently the youngest position player in Major League Baseball. On June 18th, the Ponce, Puerto Rico native went 1-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and three stolen bases in a win at Coors Field against the Colorado Rockies. At the age of 20 years and 269 days, Houston's top prospect became the third-youngest player in the modern era to steal three bases in a single game. Hall of Famers Rickey Henderson (20 years and 241 days) and Ty Cobb (20 years and 258 days) are the only two players to accomplish the feat at a younger age. Additionally, Correa set a franchise record with 15 hits through his first 10 career games, batting .349 (15-for-43) with seven runs scored, three doubles, three home runs and seven RBI. The previous club record was 13 hits, set by Ken Caminiti (1987) and Jose Altuve (2011). On June 23rd against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium, Correa recorded his third three-hit game of the month, going 3-for-6 with three runs scored, one double, a home run and four RBI. Correa's four home runs in his first 15 Major League games tied Jon Singleton (2014) and J.D. Martinez (2011) for the club record. The top overall selection in the 2012 MLB Draft became the first shortstop since at least 1914 to record nine doubles within his first 20 games in the Majors. The last Major Leaguer with nine doubles in his first 20 games, regardless of position, was Cleveland's Carlos Santana in 2010. Sparked by the rookie's stellar play, the Astros rank third in the Majors in runs scored (111) and have gone 12-10 since his debut.

Others receiving votes for AL Rookie of the Month included Montgomery (3-2, 1.62 ERA, 2 CG, 2 SHO); Billy Burns (.307, 15 R, 12 RBI, 7 SB) and Kendall Graveman (3-2, 1.93 ERA, 1 CG, 42.0 IP) of the Oakland Athletics; Joey Butler (.305, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 5 SB) of the Tampa Bay Rays; and Correa's Houston teammate Lance McCullers (3-2, 2.11 ERA, 1 CG, 40 SO).

In recognition of his American League Rookie of the Month Award, Carlos Correa will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, for his accomplishment.
