Red Sox recall right-handed pitcher Noe Ramirez from Triple-A Pawtucket

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today recalled right-handed pitcher Noe (pronounced "no-EH") Ramirez from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, infielder Travis Shaw was optioned to Pawtucket following last night's game. Ramirez will be active for tonight's game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Angel Stadium beginning at 9:05 p.m. ET.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Ramirez, 25, rejoins the Red Sox for the second major league stint of his career, both this season. The right-hander was selected to Boston's active roster on July 3 and made his big league debut that night against the Astros at Fenway Park, taking the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) in one inning of work. Ramirez began the year with Pawtucket where he is 4-0 with a 2.15 ERA (7 ER/29.1 IP) and 27 strikeouts in 18 games (one start). Setting aside his lone start of the year, in which he allowed three runs in three innings, Ramirez has posted a 1.37 ERA (4 ER/26.1 IP) in 17 relief appearances for the PawSox. Each of his last five appearances with Pawtucket have been scoreless (7.1 IP). Signed by the Red Sox as a fourth-round selection in the 2011 June Draft, Ramirez is 11-10 with a 2.88 ERA (82 ER/256.2 IP) and 240 strikeouts in 112 career minor league outings (17 starts).

Shaw, 25, has appeared in nine games in four major league stints this season, going 3-for-15 (.200) with two runs scored and a walk. He has played in five games (three starts) at first base and in three games (one start) at third base, also making one appearance in left field. In 66 contests for Pawtucket this season, he has hit .250 (62-for-248) with nine doubles, two triples, five home runs, 28 RBI, and 23 walks, including a .317 (38-for-120) batting average in his last 32 Triple-A games dating back to May 20. For the PawSox, he has appeared at third base (37 games), first base (26), and left field (3). Signed by the Boston as a ninth-round selection in the 2011 June Draft, Shaw has hit .261 (485-for-1,857) with 117 doubles, 11 triples, 69 home runs, and 278 RBI in 510 games over parts of five seasons in the minor leagues.
