Cubs recall RHP Yoervis Medina and RHP Dallas Beeler, LHP Clayton Richard designated for assignment

CINCINNATI - The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitchers Yoervis Medina and Dallas Beeler from Triple-A Iowa. Left-handed pitcher Clayton Richard has been designated for assignment.

Both Medina and Beeler, who will serve as the club's 26th man today, will be available for the Cubs today, as Beeler will make the start in the second game of today's doubleheader vs. the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.

Beeler, 26, joins the Cubs for the second time this season, as he served as the 26th man on July 7 vs. St. Louis and recorded a no-decision after limiting the Cardinals to two runs on four hits in five innings in Chicago's 5-3 victory. Beeler made his major league debut with the Cubs last year and went 0-2 in his two big league starts despite posting a 3.27 ERA (4 ER/11.0 IP).

Beeler is 2-5 with a 6.02 ERA (43 ER/64.1 IP) in 14 starts with Iowa this season, though he is 1-0 with a 2.01 ERA (7 ER/31.1 IP) in his last six minor league starts. Beeler began the season on the major league 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation and was activated and optioned to Triple-A on May 18. He has pitched six innings or more in four of his last six outings while allowing two earned runs or less in all six, including zero or one earned run in three starts. He has struck out 31 batters and walked only three in his last 31.1 innings.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Beeler went 9-6 with a 3.40 ERA (47 ER/124.1 IP) with Iowa last year. He struck out 83 batters and walked only 32 in 124.1 innings pitched during his first-career season in Triple-A. Beeler is 23-29 with a 3.89 ERA (213 ER/492.2 IP) in 100 career minor league outings (92 starts).

Medina, 26, begins his second stint with the Cubs as he produced 5.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts in three relief appearances for Chicago, June 17-26. He was acquired from the Seattle Mariners for catcher Welington Castillo on May 19, and in two stints with Iowa has an 0-2 record with one save and an 8.68 ERA (18 ER/18.2 IP) in 16 relief outings, striking out 21 and walking 12 in 18.2 innings.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pound righthander has posted a 2.73 ERA (43 ER/142.0 IP) in 144 career relief appearances between the Mariners (2013-15) and Cubs (2015), turning in a 10-9 record with 43 holds and two saves. He has struck out 143 batters in 142.0 innings while limiting opponents to a .212 batting average, including a .227 mark vs. right-handed hitters and a .193 mark vs. lefthanders. Medina has held opponents to a .320 on-base percentage and only a .319 slugging percentage, good for just a .639 opponents OPS.

Medina broke into the big leagues with the Mariners in 2013 and went 4-6 with one save and a 2.91 ERA (22 ER/68.0 IP) in 63 relief appearances while ranking second among all American League rookies with 19 holds. Last season, he improved upon those numbers by going 5-3 with 21 holds and a 2.68 ERA (17 ER/57.0 IP) in 66 relief outings while leading the Mariners and ranking 12th in the league in holds. This year, Medina was 1-0 with three holds, one save and a 3.00 ERA (4 ER/12.0 IP) in 12 relief outings for Seattle prior to the trade.

Richard, 31, is 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA (9 ER/15.0 IP) in three appearances (two starts) with the Cubs this season. He was acquired from the Pirates on July 3 for a cash consideration.
