Seattle Mariners, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM & Northwest Harvest team up for fight hunger food drive

Annual food drive at Safeco Field scheduled for Saturday, July 25, vs. Toronto Blue Jays

The Seattle Mariners are once again joining with KIRO Radio 97.3 FM and Northwest Harvest for the annual food and donations drive at Safeco Field known as Fight Hunger Day.

On Saturday, July 25, when the Mariners take on the Toronto Blue Jays, volunteers will be outside all the entrances to the ballpark accepting donations of cash and non-perishable food items starting at 11 a.m. Game time vs. the Blue Jays is 1:10 p.m. Donations are also being accepted online at northwestharvest.org. There is also a text option by sending "ENDHUNGER" to 80888 to make a $10 donation to Northwest Harvest (the charge will be added to your phone bill).

In Washington, one in five kids doesn't get enough to eat and during the summer months they don't have school meal programs to rely on. Last year, Northwest Harvest distributed more than 32 million pound of food to 370 food banks across the state that provide two million meals each month. Because Northwest Harvest deals in such volume, and has low administrative costs, it can feed an entire family for just 67 cents.

Suggested non-perishable food donations include oatmeal, whole grain pasta, canned vegetables, canned fruit, fish or meat, shelf-stable milk, baby formula, infant cereal, jarred baby food, powdered or canned milk. Cash donations are also appreciated as they allow Northwest Harvest to purchase fresh produce that supplements canned products available at food banks.

The agency does not receive government funding and relies on donations from individuals, businesses, foundations and other organizations. For more information about Northwest Harvest, or to donate, call 206-625-0755 or log onto northwestharvest.org.
