Cardinals activate Jaime Garcia from D.L.

Reliever Sam Tuivailala optioned to Memphis (AAA)

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have activated left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia (left groin strain) from the 15-day disabled list and that they had optioned right-handed reliever Sam Tuivailala to Memphis (AAA) following last night's game. Garcia is slated to start tonight's game against Cincinnati.

Garcia, who missed 20 games since going on the disabled list July 4, is 3-3 with a 1.69 ERA in seven starts this season - the last coming on June 24 at Miami.

Garcia, 29, worked 5.0 scoreless innings in an injury rehabilitation start for Peoria (A) last Thursday (July 23), teaming with two Chiefs relievers on a combined no-hitter. Garcia fanned six batters in that start, allowing just one base-runner (hit batsman), while throwing 58 pitches.

Tuivailala (0-1, 1.80 ERA) was unscored upon in his last eight appearances (8.0 IP) for the Cardinals, striking out seven.
