Pirates Acquire Pitcher J.A. Happ from Seattle

The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired left-handed pitcher J.A. Happ (pronounced Jay) from Seattle in exchange for minor league pitcher Adrian Sampson. The announcement was made by Pirates Executive Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington.

The 32-year-old Happ went 4-6 with a 4.64 ERA (108.2ip/56er) and 82 strikeouts in 21 appearances (20 starts) this year for the Mariners.

Happ has a career record of 55-59 with a 4.29 ERA (949.1ip/452er) and 790 strikeouts in 185 games (160 starts) between Philadelphia (2007-10), Houston (2010-12), Toronto (2012-14) and Seattle (2015). Last year with the Blue Jays he recorded double digit win totals for the second time in his career after going 11-11 with a 4.22 ERA.

The Pirates will make a corresponding move on the 25-man active roster when Happ joins the team.
