Red Sox acquire right-handed pitcher Ryan Cook from Oakland

The Boston Red Sox today acquired right-handed pitcher Ryan Cook from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.  

Cook, 28, has spent the majority of the 2015 season with Oakland's Triple-A Nashville affiliate, going 4-1 with eight saves, a 4.05 ERA (15 ER/33.1 IP), and 26 strikeouts in 30 relief outings. He made four major league appearances for the A's from April 26-May 2, going 0-2 while allowing five runs in 4.1 innings.  

Cook was a member of the 2012 American League All-Star Team. That year, he went 6-2 with a career-high 14 saves, a 2.09 ERA (17 ER), and 80 strikeouts in 73.1 innings over 71 relief appearances. The California native is 13-12 with 17 saves and a 2.93 ERA (66 ER) in 212 career major league outings, all in relief, between the Arizona Diamondbacks (2011) and A's (2012-15). Originally selected by Arizona in the 27th round of the 2008 June Draft, he has recorded 207 strikeouts in 202.2 career big league innings. Over the past three seasons, from 2012-14, he ranked sixth among AL relievers (min. 175.0 IP) in opponent batting average (.198) and seventh in ERA (2.60).

With this move, the Red Sox' 40-man roster is now at 39.
