Padres acquire C Marcus Greene Jr. from Texas Rangers in exchange for OF Will Venable

Club will also receive a player to be named later

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced that they have acquired minor league catcher Marcus Greene Jr. and a player to be named later from the Texas Rangers in exchange for outfielder Will Venable. Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller made the announcement.  

Greene, who will turn 21 years old tomorrow, is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow performed on June 29, 2015. Prior to undergoing the surgery, he had spent the entire 2015 season with Single-A Hickory of the South Atlantic League, where he hit .218 (17-for-78) with five doubles, five home runs, nine RBI in 25 games. The 5-11, 195 pound backstop owns a lifetime .250 batting average with 26 doubles, 11 home runs and 49 RBI in 138 games over parts of three minor league seasons since being selected by Texas in the 16th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of New Mexico Junior College. A resident of Palm Springs, California, Greene has made 77 career starts behind the plate as well as 16 career games in the corner outfield positions (12 LF, 4 RF). During the 2014 campaign, he was selected to the Short-Season Northwest League North Division All-Star Team after hitting .318 (47-for-148) with nine doubles, three home runs and 24 RBI for Spokane.

Venable, 32, has hit .258 (73-for-283) with 10 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 30 RBI in 98 games for the Padres this season. A resident of Austin, Texas, the 6-3, 205 pound outfielder has spent his entire professional career with the Padres organization since being selected in the seventh round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft out of Princeton University and owns a lifetime .252 batting average with 114 doubles, 81 home runs and 304 RBI in 918 games over parts of eight Major League seasons.
