White Sox announce four roster moves

MINNEAPOLIS - Prior to tonight's game at Minnesota, the Chicago White Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Erik Johnson, catcher Rob Brantly and infielder Leury Garcia from Class AAA Charlotte and right-hander Frankie Montas from Class AA Birmingham.

Johnson, 25, was named International League Pitcher of the Year today after going 11-8 with a 2.37 ERA (35 ER/132.2 IP), 136 strikeouts and a .224 opponents average (108-482) over 23 games (22 starts) with Charlotte this season. He leads the IL in ERA, strikeouts, WHIP (1.12) and strikeouts per 9.0 IP (9.23), is tied for second in wins and ranks third in opponents average.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Johnson started for the IL team at the 2015 Triple-A All-Star Game (2.0 scoreless IP) and was named IL Pitcher of the Week for June 15-21. He owns a 1.65 ERA (8 ER/43.2 IP) over seven second-half starts and is limiting right-handers to a .215 average (54-251) this season. Johnson has gone 4-3 with a 4.73 ERA (27 ER/51.1 IP) and 36 strikeouts over 10 starts with the White Sox from 2013-14. He originally was selected by Chicago in the second round of the 2011 draft.

Montas, 22, previously was with the White Sox as the 26th player for a doubleheader on July 17 vs. Kansas City but did not pitch. He was 5-5 with a 2.97 ERA (37 ER/112.0 IP), one complete game, 108 strikeouts and a .219 opponents average (89-407) in 23 starts with Birmingham this season. Montas ranks among the Southern League leaders in shutouts (T1st, 1), opponents average (3rd), strikeouts per 9.0 IP (5th, 8.68), WHIP (5th, 1.22) and ERA (6th).

The 6-foot-2, 245-pound Montas was named to the Southern League midseason All-Star team, the World Team at the All-Star Futures Game in Cincinnati and threw a 7.0-IP no-hitter on June 9 at Tennessee. Montas entered the season rated by Baseball America as the No. 5 Prospect in the White Sox organization.

Brantly, 26, is hitting .310 (63-203) with eight home runs and 38 RBI over 53 games between Birmingham and Charlotte in 2015 after beginning the season on the disabled list due to an avulsion fracture in his left thumb. He has thrown out 28.8 percent (15-52) of attempted basestealers this season.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Brantly is a career .298 hitter (76-323) with 17 doubles, four home runs and 26 RBI over 98 major-league games with Miami in 2012-13. He was claimed off waivers by the White Sox from the Marlins on December 8, 2014.

Garcia, 24, has gone 2-6 (.333) in seven games over two stints with Chicago this season. He hit .298 (104-349) with 19 doubles, three triples, three homers, 31 RBI and 30 stolen bases in 90 games with the Knights this season. Garcia ranks among the IL leaders in stolen bases (3rd) and average (6th).

Following the moves, the White Sox have 29 players on the active roster.
