Springer Nominated for Clemente Award

HOUSTON, TX--Major League Baseball announced today that outfielder George Springer is the Astros nominee for the 2015 Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet.  

Each Major League club has a nominee that is eligible for the Clemente Award, which is presented by Chevrolet. The winner will be announced prior to Game 3 of the 2015 World Series. This annual award recognizes an MLB player who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field, recognizing sportsmanship and community involvement.  

Roberto Clemente Day, which will be Sept. 16 this year, was established by MLB in 2002 to honor Clemente's legacy and to officially acknowledge local Club nominees of the Clemente Award. Fan voting for the award begins on Sept. 16 and can be done by visiting ChevyBaseball.com, which is powered by MLB Advanced Media.

Springer has served as a spokesperson for the Stuttering Association for the Young since September of 2014. Through his involvement, he has helped to raise awareness for SAY and to build compassion and understanding for individuals who stutter. Springer himself has dealt with stuttering since his youth. On July 20th, he hosted the George Springer Bowling Classic in Houston to help raise dollars for SAY.

Since the Astros are on the road on Roberto Clemente Day (Sept. 16), Springer will be recognized as the Astros Clemente Award nominee during the pregame ceremonies on Friday, Sept. 18, prior to the 7:10 p.m. Astros-A's game. During the ceremony, Chevrolet will present a check for $7,500 in Springer's name to SAY as part of his Clemente Award nomination.

In addition to his involvement with SAY, Springer has also donated his time to support the Astros Urban Youth Academy, the Astros Community Leaders program and other worthy organizations.
