Red Sox hire Frank Wren as senior vice president, baseball operations

Announce additional personnel moves in baseball operations

The Boston Red Sox today announced that Frank Wren has been hired as Senior Vice President, Baseball Operations.

In addition, the club announced three other personnel moves:

· Jared Banner has been promoted to Director, Player Personnel

· Brad Pearson, MS, ATC, CSCS has been named Head Athletic Trainer

· Paul Buchheit, MS, ATC, CSCS has been named Assistant Athletic Trainer

Athletic trainer Rick Jameyson has decided to leave the organization to pursue other opportunities.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcements.

Wren, 57, joins the Red Sox with over 30 years of experience working in the front office of baseball organizations. In his role with the Red Sox, Wren will serve as a talent evaluator and will assist Dombrowski in all aspects of baseball operations. He and Dombrowski previously worked together for 11 years between the Montreal Expos and Florida Marlins organizations from 1987-98. Most recently, Wren spent seven seasons as Executive Vice President/General Manager for the Atlanta Braves from 2008-14, part of a 15-year tenure with that organization beginning in October 1999. He also previously served as General Manager for the Baltimore Orioles in 1999.

The native of St. Petersburg, FL was Vice President/Assistant General Manager for the Florida Marlins from 1991-1998 under Dombrowski, then the Marlins' General Manager. They helped guide the organization to the 1997 World Series Championship in just its fifth year following expansion. Wren and Dombrowski also worked together in the Montreal Expos system, where Wren began his front office career in 1985 after coaching in the Expos system from 1981-84. A former outfielder, he also played in Montreal's minor league system from 1977-82.

Banner, 29, was named Director, Player Personnel. A native of Brooklyn, NY, Banner is in his ninth year in the Red Sox organization. An Amherst College graduate with a degree in Psychology, Banner first joined the club in 2007 as a fellow in the baseball operations department and has spent the past three years as Assistant Director, Player Personnel. Prior to that role, he worked as Assistant, Player Development (2008-09), Assistant, Amateur Scouting (2009-10), and Coordinator, Amateur Scouting (2010-12). While at Amherst College, Banner played four seasons (2004-07) of varsity baseball as an outfielder, and served as team captain in 2007.

Pearson, 37, has been named the club's Head Athletic Trainer, effective immediately. This season marks the 13th year in which the Ludlow, VT native has been in the Red Sox organization. For the past four years (since 2012), he served as an assistant athletic trainer for the team. Pearson, who holds a bachelor's degree in athletic training from Springfield (MA) College and a master's degree in exercise science from the University of Massachusetts, first joined the Red Sox as an athletic training intern in 2001. He has five years of experience as an athletic trainer for the club's minor league affiliates, including Augusta (2004), Greenville (2005), Wilmington (2006), and Portland (2007-08). Prior to joining the Red Sox, Pearson, worked as the Head Baseball Trainer at the College of the Holy Cross (2000-02) and the University of Massachusetts (2002-03).

Buchheit, 33, will assume the role of Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Red Sox in 2016. At present, the Sioux City, IA native is working as the club's Head Minor League Medical Coordinator, a role he has held since 2014. Prior to that position, Buchheit was the team's Athletic Training Coordinator (2012-13). Buchheit, who graduated from Buena Vista (IA) University and obtained his Master's degree in Athletic Training from the University of Northern Iowa, has six years of experience as an athletic trainer in the Red Sox minor league system for Greenville (2006-08), Salem (2009), and Portland (2010-11). Buchheit was an athletic training intern for Lowell in 2005 and for the Sarasota Red Sox in 2004.
