White Sox purchase the contract of Zach Phillips

The Chicago White Sox have purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Zach Phillips from Class AAA Charlotte.

Phillips, 29, spent the entire 2015 season with Charlotte, going 1-1 with a 3.13 ERA (19 ER/54.2 IP), 12 saves, 64 strikeouts and a .232 opponents average (47-203) over 46 relief appearances. His 12 saves led the Knights and tied for the second-most in the White Sox system. Phillips averaged 10.5 strikeouts per 9.0 IP, limited lefties to a .213 average (16-75) and held opponents to a .183 average with RISP (11-60).

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Phillips has gone 0-1 with a 3.45 ERA (6 ER/15.2 IP) and 14 strikeouts in 19 career relief appearances with Baltimore (2011-12) and Miami (2013). He was signed by the White Sox as a free agent on December 9, 2014. Phillips originally was selected by Texas in the 23rd round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft.

Following the move, the White Sox 40-man roster is at 34.
