Prince Fielder named Major League Baseball's 2015 American League Comeback Player of the Year

MLB honor is second Comeback Player Award for Fielder this season

Arlington, Texas-Texas Rangers designated hitter/first baseman Prince Fielder has been named the recipient of the 2015 American League Comeback Player of the Year Award, Major League Baseball announced today.

The Comeback Player of the Year Awards are officially sanctioned by Major League Baseball and are presented annually to one player in each League who has re-emerged on the field during the season. The 30 Club beat reporters from MLB.com, the official web site of Major League Baseball, selected the winners from an original list of 30 candidates (one per MLB Club). Pitcher Matt Harvey of the New York Mets is the 2015 National League recipient.

After appearing in just 42 games due to a neck injury in 2014, Fielder batted .305 with 23 home runs and 98 RBI in 158 games for the A.L. West Division Champion Rangers this season. He ranked third in the league with 187 hits, tied for third with 57 multi-hit games, had the A.L.'s sixth best batting average, and produced the 9th most RBI. Fielder started 157 games as the DH (139) or first baseman (18).

Acquired from Detroit on November 20, 2013, Fielder played his last game in 2014 on May 16 before undergoing season ending surgery on May 27 for a cervical fusion of the C5-C6 discs in his neck.

Past winners of the MLB Comeback Award include: Jason Giambi and Ken Griffey, Jr. (2005); Jim Thome and Nomar Garciaparra (2006); Carlos Peña and Dmitri Young (2007); Cliff Lee and Brad Lidge (2008); Aaron Hill and Chris Carpenter (2009); Francisco Liriano and Tim Hudson (2010); Jacoby Ellsbury and Lance Berkman (2011); Fernando Rodney and Buster Posey (2012); Liriano and Mariano Rivera (2013); and Casey McGehee and Chris Young (2014).

Fielder was previously selected as the 2015 A.L. Comeback Player of the Year by The Sporting News in a vote of A.L. players. He is also one of three finalists (Kendrys Morales and Alex Rodriguez) for the 2015 Players Choice A.L. Comeback Player of the Year. The winners of the 2015 Players Choice Awards will be announced on Monday night, November 9 on MLB Network.

BOBBY WILSON ELECTS FREE AGENCY: Catcher Bobby Wilson has cleared waivers and elected to become a free agent. He was received from the Tampa Bay Rays in a July 31 waiver claim and batted .221 with one home run and 10 RBI over 31 games with Texas in 2015. With this transaction, the Rangers now have 32 players on the club's 40-man roster, as well as 3 players (Alex Claudio, Yu Darvish, Nick Tepesch) on the 60-day disabled list.
