D-backs name Dave Magadan as hitting coach

The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) named Dave Magadan as hitting coach, as announced by D-backs Sr. Vice President & General Manager Dave Stewart and Manager Chip Hale.

Magadan, 53, joins the D-backs after spending the previous 3 seasons (2013-15) as hitting coach with the Texas Rangers. Prior to working with the Rangers, Magadan served as hitting coach with the San Diego Padres (2003-06) and Boston Red Sox from 2007-12.
 
"Dave Magadan brings a wealth of experience to our club, and I believe he has the knowledge to take our offense to the next level," said Hale. "In the interview process, I was very impressed with his passion for the game."
 
Over his last 9 seasons as hitting coach with the Red Sox and Rangers (2007-12), his offense ranked among American League teams in extra-base hits (2nd, 4.728), doubles (2nd, 2,890), on-base percentage (3rd, .338), OPS (3rd, .768), runs per game (3rd, 4.89), runs scored (3rd, 7,129), slugging percentage (T-3rd, .430), average (4th, .268) and hits (4th, 13,475). Boston also led the Majors in pitches per plate appearances (3.94) from 2007-12.
 
In Magadan's first year with the Red Sox in 2007, the club won a World Series championship, and Dustin Pedroia earned AL Rookie of the Year honors. Pedroia was then named the league's Most Valuable Player the following season, hitting .326 with 54 doubles, 17 home runs and 83 RBI.
 
Magadan, who began his coaching career as the Padres' Minor League hitting coordinator in 2002, played in 1,582 games over 16 Major League seasons with the New York Mets (1986-92), Florida Marlins (1993-94), Seattle Mariners (1993), Houston Astros (1995), Chicago Cubs (1996), Oakland A's (1997-98) and Padres (1999-2001).
