The Miami Marlins today announced that they have signed All-Star second baseman Dee Gordon to a five-year contract extension covering the 2016-2020 seasons, with a vesting option for the 2021 season. The announcement was made by Marlins President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill.
"I'm thrilled to be affirming our long-term commitment to Dee Gordon, not only one of the most dynamic players in baseball, but also an outstanding young man," said Marlins Owner Jeffrey Loria. "It's truly incredible and historic what he did in his first season with our ball club. He adds great energy and camaraderie in the clubhouse, but what's more, he's an exceptional person off the field."
Gordon, 27, led the National League in batting (.333), hits (205) and stolen bases (58) in 2015, his first season with Miami after being acquired in a trade last offseason. He became the second National League player since 1900, joining Honus Wagner (1908), to lead the league in hits, average and stolen bases and the first NL player since Jackie Robinson in 1949 to lead the league in average and stolen bases. Gordon, who earned the Louisville Slugger Silver Bat Award for his batting title, also won the Louisville Slugger NL Silver Slugger Award for second basemen, the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year and the Rawlings NL Gold Glove Award for fielding among second basemen. He also won the Lou Brock Award and the "Cool Papa" Bell Award for leading the National League in stolen bases.
An All-Star in both of his two full seasons in the Majors, Gordon was voted the starting second baseman for the 2015 All-Star Game after making his first All-Star Game appearance in 2014. He was acquired by the Marlins in a seven-player trade following the 2014 season after leading the NL in stolen bases and triples. Gordon made his ML debut with Los Angeles-NL in 2011 after being drafted by the Dodgers in the fourth-round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.
