The World Series Champion Kansas City Royals, Royals Charities and area Rotary Clubs will activate the 29th annual Greater Kansas City Day on April 1. Throughout the morning, Rotarians and other volunteers will be in the metro area selling newspapers on street corners and 20 metro Hy-Vee stores. And, new this year, Union Station, the location of the World Series Celebration Rally, will host a free First Pitch party from 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Greater Kansas City Day is a fundraiser for Rotary Youth Camp and other children's charities through sales of a special section of The Kansas City Star and exclusive flags. For the first time, the annual event will take place two days before Opening Night when the Royals host the defending National League Champion, New York Mets. The honorary co-chairs for this year's event are former Royals pitcher Jaime Bluma and Kansas City Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt.
The First Pitch Party at Union Station will allow fans to purchase newspapers and flags and meet Kansas City sports celebrities. From 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., Royals Hall of Fame Director Curt Nelson will have the World Championship trophy available for photo opportunities. In addition, Victor & Penny and their Loose Change Orchestra will entertain fans throughout the morning. Between approximately 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., an aerial formation flyover provided by the BeechNutz Flying Formation Group will take place over Union Station. A limited number of "World Series Celebration Rally" posters will also be available for purchase.
For a $10 donation, fans can get special edition flags celebrating the team's 2015 World Championship, while supplies last. The flags are only available at Kansas City-area Hy-Vee stores and Union Station from 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. (limited quantities per location). Fans can also secure their flag by ordering at www.royals.com/gkcdayShipping and handling fees will be applied to online orders.
