The Texas Rangers tonight announced that the club has acquired catcher Bryan Holaday from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for catcher Bobby Wilson and right-handed pitcher Myles Jaye. To make room on the 40-man roster for Holaday, the Rangers have designated left-handed pitcher Sam Freeman for assignment.
 
Holaday, 28, has seen major league action with Detroit in each of the last four seasons, including batting .281 with 2 home runs and 13 RBI over 24 games for the Tigers in 2015. Over 16 games with Detroit this spring, he batted .438 (14-32) with 4 home runs and 12 RBI in the Grapefruit League. He has spent his entire career in the Detroit organization since being selected in the 10th round of the 2010 June draft, and owns a career .251 average with 3 home runs and 30 RBI over 108 major league games from 2012-15.
 
Holaday earned all-conference honors over his last three collegiate seasons at Texas Christian University, where he batted .355 his senior year. He was born in Dallas and resides in Fort Worth, and attended W.T. White High School. He is expected to join the club in Arlington for the exhibition games on Friday and Saturday against the Cleveland Indians.
 
Wilson batted .292 (7-24) with one home run and 2 RBI over 11 games with Texas this spring after returning to the club as a non-roster invitee. He was with the Rangers over the final two months of the 2015 season as the club secured the American League West division title.
 
Jaye was acquired from the Chicago White Sox in a December 10 trade and had a 3.86 ERA (2 ER/4.2 IP) over 3 Cactus League appearances as a non-roster invitee before he was assigned to minor league camp on March 10.
 
The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Freeman to the minor leagues. Freeman had a 5.68 ERA (4 ER/6.1 IP) over 6 relief outings with Texas this spring. He posted a 3.05 ERA in 54 appearances with the Rangers in 2015.
 
With today's transactions, the Rangers' major league roster is still at its 40-player limit, along with one player (RHP Tanner Scheppers) on the 60-day disabled list.
