Following his historic debut week in the Majors, rookie shortstop Trevor Story of the Colorado Rockies has been named National League Player of the Week for the week of April 4th-10th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network. This is the first career Player of the Week honor for Story, who joins Fernando Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Dodgers (April 6-12, 1981), Salome Barojas of the Chicago White Sox (April 12-18, 1982) and fellow 2016 rookie Tyler White of the Houston Astros as the only rookies to be named Player of the Week for the first week of a season since the award's inception in 1974.
The slugger led the Majors with seven home runs, 12 RBI, 30 total bases and a 1.111 slugging percentage in six games last week while posting a .333 (9-for-27) batting average. On Sunday, Story became the first player in Major League history to hit seven home runs in his first six Major League contests, doing so with a solo shot in the eighth inning of Colorado's 6-3 win over San Diego. The 23-year-old became the first player in history (rookie or not) to hit seven home runs in his team's first six games to open a season, and also is the first Major League rookie to homer seven times in any six-game span (courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau). Story, who was selected by the Rockies with the 45th overall selection in the 2011 MLB Draft, homered twice in his Coors Field debut on Friday while driving in four in a 13-6 loss to the Padres. The Texas native also clubbed a pair of homers with four RBI in his Major League debut last Monday in Arizona, helping the Rockies to a 10-5 victory over the Dbacks on Opening Day. Story is the only player in Major League history to record two multi-homer performances within his first four career appearances.
Other noteworthy performances last week included Adrian Gonzalez (.429, 12 H, 6 RBI, .485 OBP) and Clayton Kershaw (1-0, 1.20 ERA, 14 SO, 15.0 IP) of the Los Angeles Dodgers; San Diego's Matt Kemp (.360, 3 HR, 10 RBI, .720 SLG); Anthony Rizzo (.273, 2 HR, 10 RBI, .636 SLG) ) and Jake Arrieta (2-0, 1.93 ERA, 12 SO, 14.0 IP) of the Chicago Cubs; Arizona's Jean Segura (.407, 11 H, 3 HR, 5 RBI, .889 SLG); and Cincinnati's Eugenio Suarez (.435, 9 R, 4 HR, 9 RBI, .957 SLG, .500 OBP).
