The Boston Red Sox today placed third baseman Pablo Sandoval on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to April 11) with a left shoulder strain. To fill Sandoval's spot on the 25-man roster, infielder Josh Rutledge was selected from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for Rutledge on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. Rutledge will be available in tonight's series finale against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park beginning at 7:10 p.m.
 
Sandoval, 29, has appeared in three games for the Red Sox this season, making one start. At the plate, he has gone 0-for-6 with a walk. The native of Venezuela hit .245 (115-for-470) with 25 doubles, a triple, 10 homers, and 47 RBI in 126 games last season, his first with Boston. In 998 career major league games between the San Francisco Giants (2008-2014) and Red Sox (2015-16), the two-time All-Star and three-time World Series winner has a .287 batting average (1,061-for-3,691) with 217 doubles, 20 triples, 116 home runs, and 509 RBI.
 
Rutledge, 26, has appeared in five games with Pawtucket this season, making three starts at third base and two at second base while going 6-for-19 (.316) with a pair of doubles. Acquired by the Red Sox from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last July, Rutledge appeared in 39 major league games in 2015, all with Boston. He posted a career-best .284 batting average (21-for-74) and appeared defensively at second base (30 games, 18 starts) and third base (five games, one start). In 305 career major league games with Colorado (2012-14) and Boston (2015), the right-handed batter has hit .261 (247-for-945) with 43 doubles, 13 triples, and 20 home runs. He has also played in 350 minor league games, batting .318 (443-for-1,393) with a .374 on-base percentage and .487 slugging percentage.
 
Workman, 27, began the 2016 season on the disabled list recovering from Tommy John surgery performed on June 15, 2015. Injury kept him out of the entire 2015 season. The native of Arlington, TX has appeared in 39 regular season major league games, all for the Red Sox between 2013 and 2014, going 7-13 with a 5.11 ERA (73 ER/128.2 IP) and 117 strikeouts. He saw time as both a starter (18 starts) and a reliever (21 games). The right-hander did not allow an earned run in seven postseason outings during the Red Sox' run to the 2013 World Series Championship.
