The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has acquired catcher Bobby Wilson from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for left-handed pitcher Chad Bell.
 
To make room on the 40-man roster for Wilson, the Rangers have activated catcher Chris Gimenez from the 15-day disabled list and designated him for assignment. Wilson is expected to join the Rangers on Wednesday in Toronto and a corresponding move on the 25-man roster will be made at that time.
 
Wilson, 34 was 2-for-13 with 2 RBI in 5 games/4 starts at catcher for Detroit. He opened the season at Triple-A Toledo and was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI in one game before being purchased by the Tigers on April 12 when James McCann went on the DL.
 
He was acquired by Detroit from Texas on March 29 with RHP Myles Jaye for catcher Bryan Holiday. Wilson batted .292 (7-24) with one home run and 2 RBI over 11 games with Texas this spring after returning to the club as a non-roster invitee. He was with the Rangers over the final two months of the 2015 season as the club secured the American League West division title, hitting .221 with one HR and 10 RBI in 31 games/25 starts. He has a .203 average with 9 homers and 53 RBI in 254 major league games with the Angels (2009-12), Diamondbacks (2014), Rays (2015), Rangers (2015), and Tigers (2016).
 
Bell is 1-0, 1.50 in 5 games/2 starts at Triple-A Round Rock in 2016. This is his 7th pro season after being selected by Texas in the 2009 First Year Player Draft.
 
The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Gimenez to the minor leagues. He has been on the DL all season after sustaining an infection in his lower left leg during the last week of spring training. He began a rehab assignment at Double-A Frisco on April 25 and batted .240 (6-25) with one homer and 4 RBI in 7 games.
 
With today's moves, the Rangers' major league roster remains at 40 players.
