HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros have made several roster moves today, including the selection of infielder Colin Moran to the Major League roster, officially recalling catcher Evan Gattis from Double A Corpus Christi and placing outfielder Carlos Gomez on the 15-day DL with a bruised left rib cage. To make room for Moran on the 40-man roster, the Astros designated right-handed pitcher Asher Wojciechowski for assignment. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow.
Moran, 23, will be making his debut on a Major League roster after spending the first part of this season at Triple A Fresno. With the Grizzlies, Moran was hitting .288 (36x125) with seven doubles, three home runs and a club-leading 22 RBI in 32 games. The left-handed hitting corner infielder spent the entirety of the 2016 Spring Training season with the Astros, hitting .349 (15x43) with three doubles, three home runs and nine RBI in 24 games. Moran, who was the sixth-overall selection in the June 2013 draft, was acquired by Houston from Miami in a seven-player trade on July 31, 2014.
Gattis, 29, officially rejoins the club today after a seven-game, 10-day stint with the Hooks from May 7-16. He hit safely in all seven of his games with Corpus Christi, hitting .360 (9x25) with a double, three home runs and six RBI, while starting four games at catcher and three at designated hitter. Gattis has played in 20 games this season for Houston and is hitting .203 (13x64) with four doubles, one home run and seven RBI in his limited Major League time in 2016.
Gomez, 30, has played in a total of 34 games with the Astros this season, starting 31 in center field. With his DL stint backdated to yesterday, Gomez can return to the Major League club as early as May 31.
Wojciechowski, 27, has pitched at Fresno all season, going 2-2 with a 5.33 ERA (15ER/25.1IP) in five starts for the Grizzlies. Wojciechowski appeared in five games for the Astros last season, making three starts.
The Astros have made several roster moves over the last three days, including optioning outfielder Preston Tucker to Triple A on Sunday, selecting infielder/outfielder Tony Kemp to the Major League roster yesterday and officially designating catcher Erik Kratz for assignment yesterday.
