The Oakland A's placed outfielder Josh Reddick on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left thumb, the club announced today. To take his spot on the roster, the A's have recalled outfielder Jake Smolinksi from Triple-A Nashville.
Reddick was batting .322 with five home runs and 18 RBI in 41 games before fracturing his thumb on a steal of second base in the seventh inning last night against New York. He was 22-for-47 (.468) over his last 14 games and was batting .385 over his last 25 contests. This is his sixth career stint on the DL and the A's now have 12 players on the DL.
Smolinksi was batting .248 with three home runs and 15 RBI in 39 games with Nashville. He had a .219 average over his first 34 games through May 13 but has hit safely in each of his five contests since then, going 8-for-17 (.471) with six runs scored, two doubles, two home runs and four RBI. The 27-year-old right-handed hitter made his Major League debut with Texas in 2014 and played for the Rangers and A's last year. He is a .246 career hitter with nine home runs and 38 RBI in 100 games.
