The Boston Red Sox today concluded their participation in Major League Baseball's 2016 June Draft with 30 additional selections in rounds 11-40. Red Sox Director of Amateur Scouting Mike Rikard made the announcement.
Among today's selections was shortstop Nick Lovullo, son of Red Sox Bench Coach Torey Lovullo, in the 20th round. Previously selected by the Red Sox in the 34th round of the 2015 June Draft, the 22-year-old returned to Worcester's College of the Holy Cross for his senior season in 2016, leading the Crusaders in runs scored (42) and walks (40) while posting a .363 on-base percentage in 56 games. With their 36th-round pick, the Red Sox selected Jordan Wren, son of Red Sox Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations Frank Wren. As a junior with Georgia Southern University this season, the 21-year-old Wren hit .285 (55-for-193) with a .350 on-base percentage in 55 games.
The Red Sox selected in the 17th round Boston College junior Nick Sciortino, who has helped lead the Eagles to the NCAA Super Regional round this season as the club's starting catcher. Heading into today's game against the University of Miami, the 5-foot-10, 200-pound backstop had posted a .378 on-base percentage and thrown out 19 of 34 attempted base stealers this season, leading the Atlantic Coast Conference in runners thrown out.
Over the three days of the draft, Boston selected 18 pitchers (14 right-handers, four left-handers), 10 infielders, nine outfielders, and three catchers. Of the 40 players drafted, 16 are from high school and 24 are from college.
