HOUSTON, TX - Major League Baseball announced this morning that Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa has been named the American League Player of the Week for the week of June 20-26. This marks Correa's first career Player of the Week award. In 2015, Correa received AL Rookie of the Month (June) and AL Rookie of the Year honors.
During the week, Correa hit .333 (8x24) with six runs scored, four doubles, three home runs, nine RBI, and a 1.282 OPS (.407 OBP/.875 SLG) in six games. Correa's seven extra-base hits were the most in the AL during the week, while his nine RBI and three homers were both tied for the most in the AL.
In the three-game series against the Angels in Houston to start the week (June 20-22), Correa drove in seven runs, including a walkoff two-run double on June 21. It was his fourth career walkoff hit and his club-best third walkoff hit of the season.
At 21 years, 279 days old, Correa is the youngest player in club history to receive a Player of the Week award. Shortstop Andujar Cedeno held the previous club record, as he was 22 years, 19 days old when he received NL Player of the Week honors for the week of Sept. 2-8, 1991.
The Astros have now had four players win the AL Player of the Week award this season, as Tyler White, Jose Altuve and Colby Rasmus won the first three awards of the 2016 season. The Astros four Player of the Week award winners are the most in the Majors this season.
This also marks the sixth time in franchise history that the Astros have had four players win a Player of the Week award in the same season, and the first time since the 2008 season when Lance Berkman (two times), Carlos Lee, Ty Wigginton and Roy Oswalt each earned NL Player of the Week honors.
In recognition of his American League Player of the Week award, Correa will be awarded a watch courtesy of Game Time, the leader in licensed sports watches, available at MLB.com.
