Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending June 26th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.
Correa batted .333 (8-for-24) with six runs scored, four doubles, three home runs and nine RBI over six games to claim his first career AL Player of the Week Award. Among AL leaders, Carlos finished the period first in doubles and extra-base hits (7), tied for first in home runs and RBI, tied for second in total bases (21) and third in slugging percentage (.875). The 2015 AL Rookie of the Year is the fourth different Astro to take home weekly honors this season, joining Jose Altuve, Colby Rasmus and Tyler White.
On Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels at Minute Maid Park, Correa went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI in Houston's 3-2 victory over the Halos. The first overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft delivered the game-winning tworun single in the ninth inning, his third walk-off hit of the 2016 season and fourth of his career. It was Houston's sixth walk-off win this season, which is one shy of their seven walk-off wins accomplished last season. Correa connected for his 33rd career home run as a shortstop in Houston's 13-5 win over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday at Kauffman Stadium. The 21-year-old now ranks second in home runs by a shortstop in Astros history, trailing only Adam Everett (35). Led by their dynamic shortstop's stellar week at the plate, Houston finished the period 5-1 and enjoyed a seven-game winning streak from June 18th- 25th, their longest such streak since winning 10 consecutive contests from April 24-May 3, 2015. Since the calendar flipped to May, the Astros are 32-20 and are now two games over .500 for the season at 39-37.
Other noteworthy performances last week included Carlos' teammate Jose Altuve (.400, 6 R, 2 2B, 3 HR); Adam Jones (.433, 9 R, 2 HR, 7 RBI) of the Baltimore Orioles; Lonnie Chisenhall (.450, 9 H, 2 3B, 6 RBI) of the Cleveland Indians; Ian Desmond (.500, 10 H, 3 HR, .950 SLG) of the Texas Rangers; and David Robertson (0.00 ERA, 4 SV, 6 SO) and Chris Sale (2-0, 1.80 ERA, 15.0 IP, 16 SO) of the Chicago White Sox.
