SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced they have agreed to terms with Taiwanese right-handed pitcher Wen-Hua Sung. The agreement with Sung is the Padres first ever with an Asian amateur player. Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Prellermade the announcement.
The 19-year-old right hander is currently pitching for the Chinese Taipei National U-23 team. Sung is also currently attending National Taiwan Sports University and playing for the University team. He performed in the 2013 IBAF U-18 World Cup, where he faced a U.S. team that included first-round selections LHP Brady Aiken (Cleveland), RHP Jack Flaherty (St. Louis), LHP Justus Sheffield (Cleveland), RHP Luis Ortiz (Texas) and INF Cole Tucker (Pittsburgh). In the 2009 Asia Little League Championship he pitched 7.0 scoreless innings and hit seven home runs, being named the best pitcher and winning the home run title of the championship. Sung's little league team went on to Williamsport, PA for the Little League World Series, finishing second. 
"Sung brings a tremendous track record of performance," said Preller. "We're excited to add one of the most successful Taiwanese players and look forward to him continuing his development into his professional career."  
 
Sung has enjoyed several honors over the past few years, including being named to the Chinese Taipei National U-15 team in 2011. In 2013, he was named the Most Valuable Player of the E-Sun Cup High School tournament where he pitched 8.0 scoreless innings, all in relief. In 2014, Sung was named MVP of the Sadaharu Oh Cup High School tournament. Later in 2014 he pitched 14.0 scoreless innings in the Black Jaguar High School tournament for which he named best pitcher as well as an All-Star for the tournament. In 2016, he was named to the Chinese Taipei National U-23 team as a 19 year old.
