Prior to tonight's game vs. the New York Yankees, the Chicago White Sox placed catcher Alex Avila on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring and purchased the contract of catcher Omar Narvaez from Class AAA Charlotte. To make room for Narvaez on the 40-man roster, the White Sox transferred right-handed pitcher Jake Petricka to the 60-day disabled list.
 
Narvaez, 24, is hitting .239 (45-188) with eight doubles, two home runs, 16 RBI and 18 runs scored over 54 combined games between Class AA Birmingham and Charlotte this season. He has thrown out 25.0 percent (12-48) of attempted basestealers, including 8-29 (27.6) with the Knights. Narvaez, who has no major-league experience, will wear uniform No. 38.
 
Narvaez, 5-foot-11 and 215 pounds, is a career .277 (427-1,543) hitter with 57 doubles, seven triples, seven homers, 170 RBI, 176 walks and a .353 on-base percentage in 459 games over eight minor-league seasons in the Tampa Bay and White Sox organizations. He has thrown out 40.1 percent (161-401) of attempted basestealers. Narvaez was acquired by the White Sox in the minor-league portion of the Rule 5 draft on December 12, 2013. He originally was signed by the Rays as a free agent on May 14, 2009,
 
Avila, 29, is hitting .236 (29-123) with six doubles, three home runs, six RBI and 13 runs scored in 41 games this season, his first with the White Sox.
 
Petricka, 27, is expected to miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on June 10 to repair and debride a torn labrum in his right hip. He has been on the disabled list since May 5.
