The Boston Red Sox today added catcher Bryan Holaday to the active major league roster. To make room, catcher Ryan Hanigan was placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to August 5) with left ankle peroneal tendinitis.
President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.

• Holaday, who will wear number 59, was claimed by Boston yesterday off waivers from Texas. The 28-year-old catcher appeared in 30 games for the Rangers this season before being designated for assignment on Monday. He batted .238 (20-for-84) with six doubles, one triple, and two home runs for Texas, also throwing out four of 14 attempted base stealers in 25 starts behind the plate. The Rangers went 17-8 in Holaday's starts, winning each of his final eight and 11 of his last 12. Selected by Detroit in the sixth round of the 2010 June Draft, he has hit .248 (85-for-343) with five home runs in 138 games between the Tigers (2012-15) and Rangers (2016), making each of his 93 starts at catcher and throwing out 21 of 89 attempted base stealers (24%). Holaday also threw 1.1 scoreless innings of relief in the Rangers' 17-5 loss at Minnesota on July 2, the lone pitching appearance of his career.
• Hanigan, 35, has batted .158 (15-for-95) in 29 games with the Red Sox this season, having missed 26 games from June 5 to July 4 while on the 15-day disabled list with a neck strain. A native of Andover, MA, the right-handed hitting backstop has appeared in 641 major league games over 10 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds (2007-13), Tampa Bay Rays (2014), and Red Sox (2015-16), combining to hit .250 (462-for-1,848) with a .345 on-base percentage. He has appeared in 83 games for Boston, with the Red Sox going 48-30 in his starts behind the plate. Originally signed by Cincinnati as a non-drafted free agent in 2002, Hanigan has thrown out 112 of 338 attempted base stealers (33%) while posting a 3.69 catcher's ERA in his major league career. He has caught two no-hitters, both thrown by the Reds' Homer Bailey.
