Prior to tonight's game against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Boston Red Sox recalled left-handed pitcher Henry Owens from Triple-A Pawtucket.
President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.
Owens, 24, has made four starts for Boston over two major league stints this season, going 0-1 with a 7.79 ERA (15 ER/17.1 IP). He most recently pitched for the Red Sox on August 21 at Detroit, taking the loss after surrendering eight runs in 5.0 innings. The left-hander went 10-7 with a 3.53 ERA (54 ER/137.2 IP) and a .217 opponent batting average in 24 starts with the PawSox this season, striking out 135 batters and walking 81. In his final seven minor league outings, he went 4-2 with a 1.96 ERA (9 ER/41.1 IP) and 48 strikeouts against 18 walks. Selected by the Red Sox in the first round of the 2011 June Draft, Owens is 4-5 with a 5.27 ERA (47 ER/80.1 IP) in 15 major league starts, and 53-31 with a 3.35 ERA (244 ER/655.2 IP) and 707 strikeouts in 120 minor league games (119 starts).
