Pirates acquire LHP Phil Coke for cash considerations

The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired left-handed pitcher Phil Coke in a minor league deal with the New York Yankees in exchange for cash considerations. The announcement was made by Executive Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington. The Pirates will make a corresponding move on the 40-man roster tomorrow when Coke is expected to join the team in Pittsburgh.

The Pirates will make a corresponding move on the 40-man roster tomorrow when Coke is expected to join the team in Pittsburgh.
 
Coke, 34, spent the majority of the 2016 season with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he went 5-3 with a 3.20 ERA (76.0ip/27er) in 23 games (11 starts). He went 4-2 with a 1.46 ERA (55.2ip/9er) in his 11 starts. He also went 1-0 with a 0.55 ERA (16.1ip/1er) and 18 strikeouts in three appearances (two starts) during the post-season with Scranton-Wilkes Barre, who captured the Triple-A National Championship Tuesday.
 
Coke also made three relief appearances with the Yankees in May and gave up five runs (four earned) in 6.0 innings of work. He made his last big league appearance on 5/16.
 
A veteran of nine Major League seasons, Coke made his big league debut with the Yankees in 2008. He spent five years (2010-2014) pitching with the Tigers, where he made a career-high 74 appearances in 2010.
 
In 404 career games (15 starts) in the Majors, Coke has produced a 22-27 record, eight saves and a 4.23 ERA (417.0ip/196er).
