The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has signed free agent right-handed pitcher Andrew Cashner to a one-year contract for the 2017 season. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The 30-year-old right-hander split the 2016 season between San Diego and Miami, combining for a 5-11 record with a 5.25 ERA (77 ER/132.0 IP) over 28 games/27 starts. Cashner's run support average of 4.23 runs per 9 innings ranked as the 8th-lowest among National League pitchers with 25-or-more starts. He was traded from San Diego to Miami on July 29 after being acquired by the Padres in a January 2012 deal with the Cubs. 
Over his four Major League seasons as a starting pitcher (2013-16), Cashner has averaged 26 starts and 154.0 innings per year with 7.3 strikeouts per 9 innings and a 1.309 WHIP figure. He is one of 44 Major League pitchers with at least 120.0 innings in each of the last 4 campaigns, and his run support average of 3.50 in that span is the 2nd-lowest of any big-league pitcher (minimum 400.0 IP).
A four-time selection in MLB's June draft, Cashner signed with the Cubs after being the 19th overall pick in 2008 out of Texas Christian University. Cashner resides in Montgomery, Texas, which is near his hometown of Conroe. He has never pitched in a big-league game at Globe Life Park in Arlington. A pitcher born in Texas has not made a start for the Rangers since Mesquite native Jason Jennings' 6 starts in 2008.
With the signing of Cashner, the Rangers' Major League roster has 39 players.
