The Phillies have hired former general manager Terry Ryan as a special assignment scout, Vice President & General Manager Matt Klentak announced today.
Prior to joining the Phillies, Ryan had spent the last 31 years with the Minnesota Twins, including 19 as the club's general manager (1994-2007, 2012-16). He is one of only five people to hold that position in the franchise's history. During his years as GM, the Twins won four American League Central Division titles (2002-04, 2006) and Ryan was twice named Executive of the Year by The Sporting News. 
"I have known Terry for more than a decade and have enormous respect for all that he accomplished during his tenure with the Twins," said Klentak. "Terry's work ethic, loyalty and track record as a talent evaluator are simply unparalleled in our game."
"I'm very happy to be joining the Phillies and have the opportunity to provide some impact and evaluation," said Ryan. "This is an exciting time for the franchise as they have what many in the industry consider to be one of the top farm systems in baseball."
As the Twins' scouting director from 1986-91, Ryan oversaw drafts that produced players such as Chuck Knoblauch, LaTroy Hawkins, Denny Neagle, Scott Erickson, Brad Radke and Eddie Guardado, who combined for 10 All-Star selections, as well as former American League Rookie of the Year Marty Cordova. Ryan also served as Minnesota's vice president of player personnel (1992-93) and spent six years (1980-85) as the midwest scouting supervisor for the New York Mets.
