BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today announced that the club will not tender a 2017 contract to catcher Bryan Holaday. As a result, Holaday becomes a free agent. Boston tendered 2017 contracts to the other 31 unsigned players on its major league roster.
President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.
Claimed by Boston off waivers from Texas on August 5, Holaday hit .231 (27-for-117) between the Rangers and Red Sox in 2016, with the clubs posting a 22-13 record in his starts. The 29-year-old backstop has appeared in 152 major league games for the Tigers (2012-15), Rangers (2016), and Red Sox (2016) since being selected by Detroit in the sixth round of the 2010 June Draft, batting .245 (92-for-376) with five home runs and 44 RBI. The Texas native has made 103 starts at catcher and appeared in 136 games behind the plate, throwing out 23 of 94 (24.5%) attempted base stealers while posting a 4.31 catcher's ERA in 969.0 innings.
With the move, Boston's 40-man roster is now at 39.
