The Phillies have selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. from triple-A Lehigh Valley, Vice President and General Manager Matt Klentak announced today. To make room on the 25-man roster, outfielder Howie Kendrick was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right abdominal strain, retroactive to April 16.<o:p>
Leiter, 26, allowed one run in 5.1 innings in two appearances for Lehigh Valley, striking out 11 batters, including all eight of the outs he recorded in his last outing on April 12. He is 27-22 with a 3.38 ERA in 95 career minor league games (69 starts) in the Phillies organization. Leiter, who was selected by the Phillies in the 22nd round of the June 2013 draft, will wear number No. 59.<o:p>
Leiter's father, Mark Leiter Sr., pitched for the Phillies from 1997-98. The pair would become just the second father-son duo to ever play for the Phillies, joining Ruben Amaro Sr. (1960-65) and Ruben Amaro Jr. (1992-93, 1996-98). <o:p>
The 33-year-old Kendrick is hitting .333 with four doubles, a triple and five RBI through 10 games this season.<o:p>
