SEATTLE, Wash. - Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:
Machi (#64) and Pagan (#54) will be in uniform and available for tonight's (7:10 p.m. PT) game vs. the Angels at Safeco Field.
Seattle now has 7 days to trade, release or outright Fien to the minors.
Seattle's Major League, 40-man, roster remains full at 40.
Machi, 35, is 1-0 with 4 saves and a 0.00 ERA (0 ER, 8.0 IP) with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk in 8 relief appearances with AAA Tacoma this season. Among Pacific Coast League leaders, he ranks T3rd in saves (4). He began the season with 7 consecutive outings without issuing a walk. In his first 5 outings, Machi earned 3 saves while scattering 3 hits and striking out 2 in 4.1 innings of work. The 6-foot, 235-pound right-hander has held left-handed batters hitless in 8 at-bats with 3 strikeouts while right-handed batters are batting .368 (7x19) with 1 walk and 1 strikeout vs. Machi.
He last appeared in the Majors in 2015 when he split the season with San Francisco and Boston. Machi began the season with the Giants, posting a 1-0 record with a 5.14 ERA (20 ER, 35.0 IP) with 22 strikeouts and 14 walks in 33 relief appearances. After being designated for assignment by the Giants on July 20, he was claimed off waivers by Boston on July 28. In 26 games with the Red Sox, Machi went 1-0 with a 5.09 ERA (13 ER, 23.0 IP) with 20 strikeouts and 8 walks. He made his Major League debut with the Giants on Sept. 3, 2012 vs. Arizona at the age of 30. In parts of 4 Major League seasons in San Francisco (2012-15) and Boston (2015), Machi has compiled a career record of 12-2 with 6 saves and a 3.47 ERA (71 ER, 184.0 IP) with 148 strikeouts and 53 walks. The native of El Tigre, Venezuela, originally signed with Philadelphia as a non-drafted free agent on Feb. 22, 2000.
Pagan, 25 (turns 26 on May 7), will be making his Major League debut in his first appearance. He earned 1 save and posted a 3.27 ERA (4 ER, 11.0 IP) with 18 strikeouts and 7 walks in 6 relief appearances with AAA Tacoma this season. He has recorded at least 2 strikeouts in each of his 6 outings, including a season-high 5 strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work on April 14 vs. El Paso. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound right-hander is averaging 14.73 strikeouts-per-9.0-innings (18 K, 11.0 IP) with the Rainiers this season. Among Pacific Coast League relievers (zero games started), Pagan ranks 4^th in strikeouts. He is tied with Modesto's Matt Festa and Modesto's Lukas Schiraldi for the strikeout lead among Mariners minor leaguer relievers. He has worked at least 1.1 innings in each of his 6 games, including a season-long outing of 2.1 innings on April 24 at Albuquerque. Right-handed batters are hitting .120 (3x25) with 15 strikeouts and 5 walks vs. Pagan while lefties are batting .182 (2x11) with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks against the right-hander. The native of Greenville, SC, was originally selected by the Mariners in the 10^th round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Belmont Abbey College (Belmont, NC).
Fien, 33, has posted a 15.00 ERA (10 ER, 6.0 IP) with 6 strikeouts and 4 walks in 6 relief appearances with the Mariners this season. Since being selected from AAA Tacoma on April 26, he made one appearance, allowing 3 runs on 2 hits (1 home run) and 1 walk with 1 strikeout in 0.1 innings pitched on April 30 at Cleveland. The 6-foot-2, 212-pound right-hander posted a 2.08 ERA (1 ER, 4.1 IP) with 3 strikeouts in 4 outings with Tacoma after being outrighted on April 12. He combined to go 1-1 with a 5.49 ERA (24 ER, 39.1 IP) with 35 strikeouts and 10 walks in 39 relief appearances last season with Minnesota and Los Angeles - NL. In parts of 8 Major League seasons with the Tigers (2009-2010), Twins (2012-2016), Dodgers (2016) and Mariners (2017), Fien has compiled a career record of 17-17 with a 4.29 ERA (135 ER, 283.0 IP) with 247 strikeouts and 59 walks in 299 career relief appearances. The native of Santa Rosa, CA, was selected by Detroit in the 20^th round of the 2006 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
Vogelbach, 24, hit .143 (2x14) with 1 RBI in 6 games with the Mariners after being recalled from AAA Tacoma on April 23. After going 1-for-4 in each of his first two games with the Mariners (4/23 at OAK & 4/25 at DET), he was 0-for-his-last-6 with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts in 4 games. Prior to his recall, he was batting .309 (17x55) with 6 runs, 3 doubles, 2 home runs, 14 RBI and an .882 OPS in 16 games with the Rainiers. He made his Major League debut with Seattle last season, appearing in 8 games in September. He was acquired from Chicago-NL on July 20, 2016 along with Paul Blackburn (rhp) for Mike Montgomery (lhp) and Jordan Pries (rhp). In seven minor league seasons, he is a career .286 (577x2013) hitter with 312 runs, 121 doubles, 7 triples, 85 home runs, 369 RBI and a .391 on-base percentage in 560 career games. He was selected by the Cubs in the 2^nd round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Bishop Verot High School (Fort Myers, FL).
